Body

Once you take the packets off, you will see a generator that is mostly covered in black with green frames. We personally liked the color combination.  The GEN4000DF usually comes well packed by the manufacturers. The unit is kept well protected with a cardboard box that is sturdy enough to prevent damages that may occur during product deliveries.

Unpacking the generator isn’t something that would trouble you. The user guide provided by Sportsman is pretty well laid out as well for anyone to put things together in place. You will have to put in a quart of oil using a funnel before you can get things going with this generator. Don’t worry. The guide will instruct you how to do it.

Design

The GEN4000DF has the right size for a generator with a capacity of 4000 watts. It is about two feet tall and 17 inches along. The weight is pretty modest too at only 90 lbs. Users can lift the generator up with the handlebars that are conveniently placed. However, this unit does not come with a wheel kit. The wheel kit has to be brought separately. I guess this was one of the ways the manufacturer maintained the low price this generator comes at. We recommend using this particular wheel kit with the GEN4000DF. The GEN4000DF has a recoil start which means you crank up the generator by pulling the cable provided.

The panel design of the GEN4000DF is a rather simple one. You can operate the machine without getting yourself confused. The on/off button and all the other outlets are clearly laid out for the user to identify easily.

Switching between gas and propane is fairly easy too on the GEN4000DF. If you want to use propane as your desired fuel, you simply have to turn the fuel live valve off and close the chock after that. If you want to use gas, simply adjust the chock after disconnecting the propane turn on the fuel line.

The GEN4000DF comes with a regulator hose kit thankfully. The hose is about 5 feet long.

Power Capacity

The GEN4000DF is a generator with a starting wattage of 4000 watts and a running wattage of 3,500 watts. It isn’t too high but is quite enough to get you through with the essentials.

With 3,500 watts, you can expect to run the refrigerator, pump, few lights, television and a freezer. It can help you run the smaller items too like hair dryer, coffee maker, portable fan, electric heater and such.

In RVs, a 3,500 watts generator can take care of a 15,000 BTU air conditioner but we recommend using it with 13,500 BTU air conditioners at most for best performance. You can run a few lights, the freezer and your laptop or TV alongside.

At worksites, a 3,500 watt generator can also run around 4 to 5 power tools as well.

The GEN4000DF is powered by a 7 HP, OHV engine of 212 cc. The gas tank in the GEN4000DF takes 3.6 gallons to fill up completely. So how much runtime can you expect with the GEN4000DF? Well, while running at 50% load, this generator can serve you for around 10 hours. Propane as we know has a tendency of burning slower thus the runtime will be higher with propane. With a 20 lbs. tank, you can expect to run this machine for 12 hours at 50% load.

The GEN4000DF has the following outlets:

Four 120V outlets

One 12V DC outlet for charging batteries and such

One 120V RV Ready Outlet. The GEN4000DF does provide a 30 amp plug for RVs.

Sound

The noise generated by the GEN4000DF was recorded at around 69 decibels. This means that this unit is a bit louder than a human conversation which records noises amounting to 58 decibels. The noise made by this generator is no big deal at all. Most people would get along with the GEN4000DF comfortably.

Performance

The GEN4000DF does not disappoint in terms of performance either. We have told you about the capacity and how much load this generator is capable of taking. Life with this generator is more or less a straightforward one. The runtime is great on both gas and propane.

The GEN4000DF has few decent safety measures instilled in the generator as well. We appreciate that the low oil shutoff feature is present in this unit. Basically, the generator turns itself off when oil comes to an end so that it doesn’t end up committing a big accident that might occur from drying up. Moreover, the GEN4000DF has overload protection ability as well. The circuit breaker inside the GEN4000DF shuts itself down the second it senses an overload. This guards the appliances from damage.

Pros

  • Simple, easy to operate panel
  • Environment-friendly
  • Good runtime
  • Packed with safety features to safeguard electronic items

Cons

  • Does not come with a free wheel kit
