Despite the economic price, the Champion 46596 is built with a sturdy frame. You can expect this generator to take the beating of day to day use and still last for a significant period of time. It weighs about 97 pounds.

The bad part about the generator’s body is that it doesn’t come with wheels. This can be a trouble when moving the generator to campsites or around the house. And at 97 lbs, one can always pick this up but it will require some effort on your part. Wheels, however, can be bought separately.

This Champion 46596 generator has 4000 starting watts and a running wattage of 3,500. It is powered by a 4-stroke engine of 196 c.c. One thing that makes this engine great in my opinion is how easily it starts regardless of what the weather is like.

Champion calls it their Cold Start feature which in my opinion is something that campers who camp in the cold would definitely love. This generator has a recoil start which has to be pulled to turn the machine on. The process is very straightforward to implement.

With 3,500 running watts, the Champion 46596 is a powerhouse for a portable generator. You can expect to run air conditioners or even 15,000 BTU comfortably with this generator.

And from my observation, this generator works smoothly to run a 13,500 BTU air conditioner, an oven, lights and a fridge at once. All in all, this is a great companion for campers, tailgaters and RV owners.

At home too, you can expect the Champion 46596 to come in handy. As mentioned earlier, 3500 running watts is pretty large for a portable generator and you can expect to even run sump pumps of 1/3 and ½ horsepower with this unit.

As for the outlets, this Champion 46596 comes with a 120 V 30 A outlet that is tailored for RVs. Apart from that, there is the 120V 30A locking outlet and a 120V 20A outlet for the household needs.

For all its energy, this Champion generator is reasonably quiet too. It has a noise level of 68 decibels which is pretty low enough for you to be at peace while the generator is at work. It can be best described as a normal conversation level noise.

However, this generator isn’t as quite as generators from Yamaha or Honda. But for its price and performance, it is reasonably quiet.

The performance delivered by the Champion 46596 is great at places but has a few shortcomings too. Firstly you would love how this generator has a Volt Guard feature equipped at its outlets. This feature rest assured, will protect your appliances from unexpected power overloads.

This 120 Volt generator has a running amperage of 30 Amps. However, this generator does not meet CARB (California Air Resources Board) Compliance. Thus if you are residing in California, please avoid this generator.

The Champion 46596 produces a significant load of emission which is harmful to the environment which is why it failed to meet regulations for use in California.

The gas tank in Champion 46596 has a capacity of 3.8 gallons. This would give you a running time of about 12 hours if you’re running at half the load it is capable of taking. Which means if you run at only 2,000 watts, this generator can last up to 12 hours. At 75% capacity which is when a lot of appliances are being used, this generator would last 8-10 hours.

One more thing that this generator lacks is an oil sensor. Although for the price, one can’t really ask for more. This generator doesn’t notify beforehand when fuel is coming to an end. It simply shuts down when low and won’t start again until refilled.

    • Cold Start feature makes the generator start smoothly even in cold conditions
    • Decently low noise levels
    • Enabled with safety features for protection during overloads
    • Great runtime

    • Doesn’t come with wheels
    • Not eligible for use in California

That was all about the Champion 46596 generator. A price friendly generator that can also be a great source of power is the best way to describe this unit. It does have its shortcomings in the sense that it doesn't have wheels for you to roll it around easily but otherwise, its a great unit.
