  • Body & Design

The Champion 100165 generates a huge amount of power compared to other portable generators. Considering this one has a maximum running wattage of 7500 watts, it is only normal that this unit will be a bit bigger than generators with lower capacity levels.

The 100165 is approximately 29 inches wide and 28 inches in height. It weighs a good 218 lbs. too. While the weight is definitely high, you will have it easier nonetheless to move this generator around thanks to the never-flat tires along with the folding handle that the manufacturer provides. From our research, moving this generator has been a trouble-free experience.

One feature that you’ll come to love about the 100165 is the Cold Start Technology. This feature optimizes the unit to acclimatize with respect to harsh weather conditions. This way, this machine will start when you need it to run without any hiccups.

    Power

The Champion 100165 is powered by a four-stroke engine of 439 c.c. This unit has a push button electric start which is a welcome change from the traditional method of cranking up the generator by pulling a cord. The unit is enabled with a pull-start feature as well in case of emergencies if the push button ever fails to work properly.

The electric start is powered by an internal battery and doesn’t require any maintenance from your part as it charges itself while the generator is running.

Speaking of the capacity, the Champion 100165 is a giant in the business. When running on gas, this generator will give you a running wattage of 7500 watts while starting wattage is 9375 watts.

On propane, you will get around 8400 watts in starting wattage and running wattage clocks around 6750 watts. This is the kind of capacity that is more than enough to power the essentials and a few more additional items like TV, sound system, etc. during a power outage be it inside the home or an RV.

More is covered in this regard in the ‘Performance’ section.

The Champion 100165 scores well in terms of diversity because of the variety of outlets it comes with. The 100165 has a 120V, 30-amp locking outlet, one 120/240V 30 amp locking outlet and four 120V outlets of 20 amp which are GFCI protected to safeguard your electronic items from sudden power spikes.

    Runtime

The Champion 100165 defeats the other similar generators by the company when it comes to total runtime. A big reason why we highly recommend this generator.

When running on gas, this unit can be expected to serve you for a good eight hour period if it operates at 50% of its potential capacity. This generator can store up to 5 gallons of gas. When it comes to propane, this generator will run a good 5.5 hours at 50% load. It has a 20 lbs. propane tank.

Such lengthy durations of seamless performance are rare in generators with similar capacities as that of the Champion 100165.  A good runtime from one full filling of fuel is something you will highly appreciate in situations where electricity is down and out for an indefinite period of time.

    Sound

The sound is one area where the 100165 has disappointed us. The noise levels of this unit are a bit loud standing at 74 dBa. Considering that a normal conversation between two people creates noise levels of 58 dBA, this generator does come off as a bit loud. It is not unbearable though.

The noise levels are something you always adjust too nonetheless. To sum up, this generator is not as quiet as the ones made by Honda.

There is one aspect about which we should warn you ahead. Although the noise levels are not exactly too loud, sometimes you might get complaints from park authorities or other visitors for using this generator.

This is not a common occurrence and will only occur in some situations only depending on the nature of park authorities and other visitors. We at Consumer Helpdesk, however, consider it a responsibility to warn you ahead.

    Performance

The user experience when it comes to operating the Champion 100165 is nothing short of delightful. Using this unit is comfortable experience starting right from the convenient push-button, electric start.

The high running wattages which measure at 7500 watts and 6750 watts with gas and propane respectively, provide a great platform for the owner to run essential items like pumps, refrigerators, etc. as well as multiple lights, TV, laptop, etc.

In RVs, this kind of capacity is more than enough to run the essential items along with air-conditioners of 15,000 BTU and some more items too like television, etc.

The Champion 100165 has good safety features as well. The GFCI protected outlets provide good defense for the electronics from the unforeseeable damage of power spikes. This generator has a low-oil shutoff feature too which causes the generator to shut down in face of low fuel levels without causing damage.

The ability to use propane fuel alongside gasoline is a great benefit too. Sometimes, stores run short of gasoline as a result of increased demand from a local power outage. In such times, you would appreciate the ability to run the generator with propane.

And the lengthy runtime of the Champion 100165 is reason enough to love this generator. The only bummer is perhaps the noise level. However, this too is well within tolerable range.
